Hi Tom
I have two bitches here that keep opening up the end of their tails by wacking. What is the best thing to put on their tail in regards to Ointments and strapping. Particularly race day as that is when they are at there most highest point in regards to excitement
Cheers Corey

Hi Corey,
Exuberant tail wagers are certainly a problem!
In most instances no matter what you do to cover the end of the tail to stop them damaging it such as a plastic hair roller or other padding, it either comes off or it increases the weight on the end of the tail and makes them whack it harder.
The best solution I have come across is to tape a single key ring to the underside of the tail, about 100 to 150 mm from the end of the tail using plastic electricians tape.
This then allows you to bring the tail back up under them, and secure it loosely in place using a nylon cord through the key ring and tying the cord up on the top of the coupling.
Not covering the end of the tail with anything also allows for quicker healing of any damage to the tip of the tail.
It’s simply then a matter of removing the cord when walking or exercising, however it will be necessary to remove the key ring just prior to racing.
Cheers, Tom
