Hi Mick,
While I’m a great believer that greyhounds should have a nutritious meal in the morning on race day, in your situation where the total food intake for the day is split into two equal meals, it would certainly be better to withhold the 2 pm meal on race day, and to then feed this after the races with maybe some additional liquid added.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Mick,
By your description it sounds like the hair is worn off the tops of the bones in the tail giving an appearance of “lumps” about an inch apart.
If this is the reason, and I think it highly likely, it really means the dog has been kept in extremely poor conditions and without sufficient soft bedding.
Good food, a soft bed and time to grow the hair back is about the only thing I can suggest.
However, applying a skin softening moisturising cream with Vitamin E to the tail every day will help repair the skin on the tail and will speed up new hair growth.
Cheers, Tom
