Hi Tom
I have a young male pup, now 14 months old that has been broken in (at 12 months) on the bull ring & a slow type circle track. I mention this because from conversations with the breaker he tells me he doesnt like to see them go flat out...his break in consists of making them chase & bite on, then get them coming out of the boxes. Consequently the dog has little experience at high speed. He went to the trainers after break in & was introduced to a faster trial track. He was hand slipped on the bend first look & showed good pace. Coming up to the home bend he started crabbing badly. The next trial he had there (this time out of the boxes) he crabbed badly around the first turn & then again around the home bend. WOuld you put this down to inexperience at negotiating turns at speed or possibly an injury. I know its hard to diagnose but any injury thoughts would be helpful along with possible treatment. I told the breaker & he says he is prob sore & I should tip him out for 2 months. I told the trainer this & he disagrees, saying we should push through the soreness. Whats your thoughts?

Hi Glen,
I’m sorry mate but I have to strongly disagree with your trainer!
There is no such thing as “pushing” a young dog through any soreness or injury, as all this does is either break the dog down completely, or if it is run sore often enough, turn it into a non-chaser.
By your description of how the pup ran last time, it’s highly likely that he has severe bone pain somewhere, possibly caused by bone damage in the rail side metacarpal, left fibula or ligament damage in the right hock.
Have it checked for injuries ASAP by a specialist greyhound Veterinarian, or at the very least by a reputable dog checker. Then treat the injuries before the dog is turned out for two months.
Cheers, Tom
