Hi Tom
Hope your well? I have a couple of dogs that after a 525 yard trial or race the muscles on the middle and upper backs are quite tensed up and visible. By the time I walk back to the kennel area they are fine again. They don’t show any signs of cramp during the run and they are quite fit. Is this normal? If not what might be the cause? Thanks
Sean

Hi Sean,
While there is no solid cramp involved, it is a type of cramp, and often caused by an electrolyte imbalance involving low levels of potassium. So a Slow K or an other potassium supplement added to the main meal the night before may alleviate the problem.
The only other reason I have seen for this to occur is the consistent full body use of pulsed magnetic field treatments, as this can also cause quite a considerable electrolyte imbalance.
Cheers, Tom

Thanks Tom It’s definitely not the magnetic field therapy so it must be the potassium deficiency. Would potassium chloride powder do the trick, it’s difficult to get slow k tablets over here. Thanks

Hi Sean,
Yes potassium chloride powder is ok to use and best mixed thoroughly with the main meal. Tablets unless they are a slow release form should be crushed, and again mixed with food as potassium tablets can have some nasty side effects on the gut.
Cheers, Tom
