Ex racing grey hound now living a retired home life in the UK
For almost 1 year getting a fever for averagely 24-48hrs followed by up to 5 days of lethargy and depression every 6-8 weeks averagely. Can be less. Hasn’t been longer. Controlled with anti inflammatories and pain killers for 5 days. No medication administered between spikes
Bloods taken during spike show the following: CRP - 83mg/l CK - 742 U/L 10-200 AST - 56 U/L 0-50 CBC - unremarkable Biochemistry - unremarkable
Bloods without spike: All regular CK on two different occasions regular CK - 139 July 2023 CK - 252 November 2023
CT clear - non compressive slipped disc L7 Joint taps - clear Fecal & Urinalysis- clear
Vets unsure as what’s causing the spikes. Current diagnosis. Fever of an Unknown Origin. Considering auto immune
Could I be dealing with a recurring muscle injury? Any advice greatly appreciate

Hi Alexis, reoccurring symptoms as you have described are certainly a mystery as to what would be the cause.
The elevated level of creatine kinase could certainly point towards some type of muscle injury, and yes sever muscle strain, particularly if a large group of muscles were involved, can cause fever and general lethargy.
However this could only happen on a regular basis if the greyhound was kept in an environment where the opportunity existed for it to go on an unsupervised mad gallop around a large property, or chase livestock for an extended time whenever it was feeling real good and full of energy.
If on the other hand the general kenneling environment was limited to living in an apartment with regular walks, and possibly some supervised restricted free running on a weekly basis I would be concerned about investigating the possibility of some type of cancer, and even the possibility of bone cancer causing these symptoms.
cheers, Tom
