Hi Tom just looking ahead here. As you possibly know I race Whippets and unlike Greyhounds we stop end of November and don't start racing again until April. During this period the dogs have pretty much complete rest but we do keep the dogs weight under control. Made that mistake once before. The question is though, what sort of regime would you put into place for getting back to fitness? When to start in earnest and what sort of warm up and exercise do you recommend to regain race fitness in time for the start of the season?
Thanks

Hi David,
It’s really beyond my scope to be able to set a training schedule to be able to go from zero to race fit as it depends just too much on unknown factors such as the age of the dogs, natural fitness, previous race distance for the individual dogs, not forgetting current health and facilities easily available for improving fitness.
Therefore a training schedule is far better set by someone that knows each individual whippet, their strengths and weaknesses, and is able to keep their eye on health variations in each dog bought about by any training program.
Then of course there is the selection of food supplied suited to the workload, which then often has to be varied to suit each individual dog.
So as you can see it’s not something an outsider can contribute to.
Cheers, Tom
