Hi Jed,
Without a careful examination it’s difficult to say what has caused this. However there is little doubt that it’s a small amount of fluid and inflammation at the top of the joint.
The most likely explanation would be that the dog has knocked the wrist on something solid jumping over an obstacle of some sort. It would also be worthwhile for you to carefully examine the front limb all the way to the elbow joint as while unlikely it can occur that a minor muscle or blood vessel injury higher on the front of the leg has caused a small amount of fluid to leak down behind the skin and pool at the top of the wrist joint.
If no other symptoms exist and there is no pain in the wrist on flexion I have no doubt that the swelling will disappears over the next couple of days without any treatment. However as always if the problem persists or the dog favors the leg or even just shows discomfort after a couple of days veterinary advice and possibly an X-ray of the joint would be advisable.
Cheers, Tom
