Corns A corn under the pad is a papilloma that instead of growing outwards is forced to inward by the fact that the dog is walking on the area. Unfortunately in most instances it does have to be removed surgically! However, if found early enough it is possible using a sharp scalpel to trim away most of the hard dead pad surrounding the corn, and to trim away a considerable portion of the corn. After doing this, the rest of the corn can be killed by using what is called a “Styptic Pencil” available from most chemists. It is simply an Alum stick and it is used by dipping it into some type of wound aid such as Mercurochrome and then softly twisting the tip into the exposed corn area. Repeat this treatment with the Styptic Pencil twice daily for three or four days. The effectiveness of this treatment is in direct proportion to the successful removal of most of the corn in the first place. If you are not able to do all of the above, the only option is to have a Vet remove the whole thing. Unfortunately, some Vets are inclined to remove far too much tissue and thereby create a wound that can take up to four weeks to heal properly. Tom
