any thoughts about recovery time? and what exactly is this

Hi Rod,
I guess what you would be referring to is a rupture to the Synovial Membrane that forms part of the joint capsule and this allowing the Synovial Fluid to leak from the joint.
The Synovial membrane is located on the inside of the ligaments that form the joint capsule, therefore any damage to the ligaments of the joint will result in damage to the Synovial membrane, such as in a sprung or dislocated toe.
In some of the larger joints it is not necessary for the joint capsule to damage to have problems with the Synovial membrane. Simply excessive repeated joint movements can cause inflammation to the Synovial membrane which is then called Synovitis.
It is unfortunately impossible for me to provide any guide at all as to the time it is likely to take for a ruptured joint to heal and become functional, as this depends entirely on the type of joint, and the extent of the damage.
