Hi I have greyhound here with a terrible coat she is fed beef and gain 28 nuts. What could improve her coat Hi Jelly, I’m afraid there is no single simply answer to that question as the coat condition of the dog is a direct reflection of its health. First of all the Greyhound must get enough of the right nutrients to fulfill its body and energy requirements before any is made available to grow a shiny healthy coat. Then if the temperatures the dog is exposed to require heat conservation none of the old dead hair will fall out because it’s required to keep the dog warm. The other influences on the health of the coat is poor thyroid function, as well as liver and kidney function, problems with these organs will adversely affect coat condition, not forgetting intestinal worms of course, and in particular tape and hook worms. While I’m not personally familiar with Gain 28 as I’m not in favour of feeding complete meal prepackaged food, the thing to keep in mind is that as far as I know it has been formulated to provide everything the dog is supposed to need, and therefore adding meat to it will most likely throw the nutrient supplied out of balance in favour of protein. This will in turn affect the easily available energy component of the diet, and this will affect the ability to keep warm. It will also affect kidney function as utilizing poor quality protein for energy will increase the load on the kidneys. So to over time improve the coat of the dog you need to ensure it’s Internal organ function is spot on, and that the diet is such that it provides all of the dogs nutritional requirements to maintain good health, as well as a high enough fat and carbohydrate content to provide easily available energy to maintain body temperature. Cheers, Tom
