Hi Mark,
Due to the body volume of a greyhound, and because they do not sweat and lose body fluid as humans do, one litre I believe would be an excessive fluid load before strenuous exercise.
If you gave a greyhound 1 litre of water 4 hours prior to a race or lure trial and the dog is not currently dehydrated, and it peed it all out, the whole exercise is probably futile as there would be no gain to the dog other than having the kidneys flushed out a little. If on the other hand the dog was dehydrated and therefore some of the fluid would be taken up by the body, 4 hours before a race is really too late to try and fix the dehydration problem, and in which case the addition of the right electrolyte mixture would be an advantage compared to plain or flavored water.
However if you wished to experiment in this regard with a specific Greyhound due to dehydration problems in the past I would limit the quantity to 500 ml and add a little electrolyte to the water instead of cordial or some other flavouring .
PS. The other problem being that if for some reason the dog did not pee all of the fluid out again it could certainly cause problems with it listed racing weight.
Cheers, Tom
