Hi, I would like to ask you a question, my 19 month old greyhound has started to feel bad and has a fever of 39 degrees. he has started to pee very dark the gums and the white part of the eyes have turned yellow, the veterinarian prescribes 20 days of penicillin strepto and after 7 days of having finished the treatment the fever has returned. What do you think, Tom? Sorry mate but you have got severe problems as there is no doubt in my mind that the yellowing you are seeing is the result of severe liver damage as a result of hepatitis. Unfortunately the symptoms such as severe fever and jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes and discoloured gums) do generally only appear after the liver has all ready sustained severe damage. Causes could be bacterial, viral or could be caused as a result of a toxic substance the dog was exposed to or has eaten. If the dog was to be a pet, with aggressive treatment including more antibiotics, intravenous fluid, and anti inflammatory treatments for a month or more the dog could recover enough to live a couple of years. But unfortunately if a racing career is the required outcome the chances of this being able to be achieved are highly unlikely. Sorry mate not good news. Further reading: Hepatitis in dogsCheers, Tom

La medicación en general que usted recomendaría quisiera saber Hi Tom, what would be the antibiotic indicated for these cases? The medication in general that you would recommend would like to know The antibiotic mainly needs to be a broad spectrum such as Cephalexin at a maximum dose rate of 30 mg per Kg twice daily with food. Anti inflammatory treatment is essential such as Prednisone or Prednisolone 5 to 10 mg given in the morning and where possible the lowest effective dosage should be used. It’s also important the at least four small meals are give throughout the day instead of two larger meals, and that the meals are mainly low protein meals based on milk, cooked vegetables stews and whole meal bread with only minimal meat included in the stews. Depending on the physical state of the dog in regard to hydration it may be necessary to add intravenous fluid to the treatment regime at various stages of the treatment. However it is your local vet that has to make the decisions on how to treat your boy as he is the one that is able to not only examine the Greyhound but also has the ability to obtain essential results from blood and urine tests to guide the treatment.

Cheers, Tom

However with those levels I am familiar with it’s obvious that the dog was suffering anaemia at that last blood test result. Other results such as for instance Bun at 24.1 Mg/dL are impossible for me to interpret as our result for the same measurement would read 3.5 to 10 mmol/l. Cheers, Tom
