Hi I have a 17 month old pup who drinks very little water even after a hard work out, I do soak her nightly kibble in water which she eats, but I'm a bit concerned she doesn`t drink after exercise. Is this a problem? Cheers Rob

Hi I have a 17 month old pup who drinks very little water even after a hard work out, I do soak her nightly kibble in water which she eats, but I'm a bit concerned she doesn`t drink after exercise. Is this a problem? Cheers Rob Hi Rob, It’s certainly not unusual for a Greyhound to be a poor water drinker, and yes efficient kidney function does depend to some extent on the intake of sufficient liquid. The other side of the coin is that if the Greyhound is on a primarily fresh meat diet, and the kibble is soaked thoroughly, a considerable amount of water is ingested via the main meal as fresh meat can contain between 60 to 70% water. This is often sufficient to maintain adequate kidney function particularly with young dogs as at that point in time their kidney function is still optimal, and able to concentrate the urine efficiently, thus saving water. However I agree that after a run taking in additional liquid will help maintain good hydration, and the only thing I can suggest is to offer the dog an additional drink of a cup of water with half a cup of milk added to it to encourage drinking it, best given about half an hour after a run if possible, as well as ensuring that the main meal after the run has an a little additional water, about half a cupful, added to it. Cheers, Tom
