Hi Tom, I have a bitch racing with a low pcv, have had all tests done and apparently she has impaired kidney function (down to 50% according to pathology tests), her pcv is always around 50. latest short test was pcv 50, wc 3200 rc 7.64, haem 17, mcv 65, plat 120, neut 2000, lymph 1000, mono 200, ratio 2.0. As you can see it's not so good, however she has had 16 starts for 6 wins, 1 second, 1 third. She is a short courser who gets very tired, basically I would be happy if I could get her to keep going for another 50 metres. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi James,
Unfortunately you really are in trouble trying to improve a really low blood count that is the result of kidney damage. For the simple reason that EPO which is required by the body to stimulate red cell production is produced by the kidneys, and that can’t occur when the kidneys are damaged.
Undiagnosed kidney damage and low EPO levels is one of the most common reasons for non responsive anaemias in racing greyhounds, and now with the current swabbing protocol targeting cobalt any treatment designed to stimulate red cell production is fraught with danger and likely to result in a positive swab. You also need to be very careful not to overdose on iron or iron injections as that can in fact be toxic and result in additional strain on the kidneys.
While there are some Chinese herbal mixtures on the market that are reputed to stimulate blood counts, I’m extremely hesitant to recommend their use as it’s imposible to predict if their use would result in a positive swab or not.
Sorry mate but I’m not going to be able to be of any help to you. 😟
Cheers, Tom
