when massaging limb muscles either by hand or mechanical means such as vibrating or percussion massager is it better to lay the dog down to take the weight off the muscles?

Hi Jimbob,
As a general rule massaging is more effective when the muscle tissue is fully relaxed, and in most instances that requires the dog to be laying down. This is particularly important if there is one particular area you wish to work on thoroughly such as muscles that have knotted up too tight such as a corked thigh or the Triceps in the shoulders.
At the same time if the bench or table used to lay the dog down on is setup the right way, it would also allow you to sit down making the whole process a lot easier.
On the other hand if the massage required is to simply give the hamstrings and back muscles a good rub by hand with iodised oil, (MR Iodine) it is a lot simpler and quicker to have the dog stand while you lift the leg you are working on slightly off the ground while massaging.
It is also easier to massage the saddles and lumbar area with the dog standing up. So it really depends on what you wish to achieve whether or not you have the dog laying down.
Cheers, Tom
