Hi Tom My dog cries out when he hops up the door step, when he gets out of bed , if he is picked up, he is very tense when going over him, and he is walking with his head down and sometimes limps on his right hind leg, which he also holds up when he gets picked up He sometimes yelps when he's touched on his right hind leg but not always He has been seen by two chiros but couldn't find any thing wrong but while manipulating him made him better for a while my dog walked out on his toe's and had a shake but when he got out of the crate at home back to how he was He has since been for x ray on his spine which didn't have an answer they want to send him for a mri scan now Any ideas John

Hi John,
An extremely difficult situation when there is such severe pain involved.
First of all, when the pain is that severe manipulation by a chiro is only going to make the situation worse. For the simple reason that unless a specific problems is found pertaining to a specific spinal segment and that segment is targeted specifically in the manipulation, just general spinal rotation does nothing but increase the inflammation.
Then as you have noted there is some very temporary relief, but soon afterwards the pain levels are generally worse than before the spinal rotation.
At this point in time having an MRI done is highly unlikely to find a specific cause, is going to cost a lot of money, and if my past experience counts for anything, is highly likely to lead to very expensive exploratory surgery.
My advice would be to seek out a sympathetic vet and get him/her to prescribe a course of strong pain relief that includes as part of that pain relief either prednisolone or some similar strong anti inflammatory treatment for preferably four weeks.
At the end of that time have another look at the whole situation and how the dog is feeling before making any decisions about how to proceed further.
Cheers, Tom
