hi tom what would be the best way to use creatine & glucose together ( how much & pre race for a greyhound ) cheers mark& Donne . A difficult question to answer as there are a few variables involved that can't be got around. Yes creatine is absorbed faster and better into the muscle tissue if it is mixed with glucose at a ratio of around 10 glucose to 1 creatine, but then glucose is absorbed in 15 minutes, lasts a maximum of 1 hour, after which blood glucose actually drops lower than it was before taking glucose for up to two hours before stabilizing again. While the half life of creatine is around three hours, in other words half of the dose of creatine has been excreted from the body after three hours. Creatine also functions better for human athletes if it's in a "shake" that contains protein as well as glucose when taken within half an hour before exercise. Something difficult to achieve if the dog is kenneled before race one and is in the last couple of races on the program. Based on that i believe it would be best if around 8 grams for a 27 kg bitch or 10 grams of creatine for a 32 kg dog was given in a cupful of a drink made with something like a lactose free baby formula, which is easy to digest, about half an hour before kenneling if in a late race, and to forget about using glucose pre race. However as with anything you are thinking of using pre race to improve energy levels in a racing greyhound, they are all individuals and what may be good for one could give its kennel mate a severe dose of diarrhea, so always try your chosen formula in a trial with a time frame that mimics actual race night and time spent in the kennels. Cheers, Tom

Hi tom thanks for your reply if I could give glucose & creatine 1/2 hr b4 a race how much of each would you advice me to give in mls (ie for a 27kilo & 32 kilo dog cheers mark & Donne If you are able to give both 30 minutes prior to exercise, and you are using the liquid creatine formulation 4 ml should suffice for a greyhound regardless of weight, and as far as glucose is concerned it depends on the formulation of the liquid you are using, however if using the powdered form 30 grams would be the maximum amount dissolved in a palateble liquid. As I mentioned in the previous post anything you are going give a racing greyhound prior to racing to boost energy levels should be tested in a trial as both or either can make some dogs feel bilious, and what is the good of trying to boost energy levels if the mixture used makes the individual dog feel crook or causes diarrhea. Cheers, Tom
