Hi Jack,
Human growth hormones are generally used to stimulate cell growth which includes faster healing of muscle injuries and the general development of lean muscle tissue. There is also some anecdotal evidence that it improves fast twitch muscle fibre and therefore would improve speed.
In the past human growth hormone has been species specific and therefore human growth hormone was not effective in animal treatment, however I was under the impression that unlike previous formulations of human growth hormone genotropin has the same general effects on canines as it does on humans.
Would it cause a positive swab? While I'm not aware of a greyhound ever having tested positive for human growth hormone, a analytic test is certainly used in human athletics and a number of positive swabs have been detected since 2006 when a test for HGH was implemented, so I have no doubt that it would also be detectable in the racing greyhound. However from my recollection of the specific test it would require a blood swab to detect this substance as it is found in the blood plasma and not in a urine sample.
Cheers, Tom
