Hi Donnie,
The liquid from pearl barley is excellent additive for use with racing greyhounds as it is a natural gentle diuretic and assists kidney efficiency, and while it does increase urine volume slightly, unless it was given in massive amounts it would not be the cause of any dehydration if it occurred.
The most efficient way to use it would be when it is needed the most, and that is for the two days after a hard run. One cup full a day should be sufficient under normal circumstances but could be increased to a cup full twice daily if considered necessary.
There again because it's such a gentle diuretic, for those dogs that do suffer from poor kidney function it could be used every day without any adverse effects.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Donnie, I see no problems with giving them 100ml with food on a daily basis, and yes it should do away with any need to use Neutradex. In fact I'm not a great fan of Neutradex as depending on the dog it can create more pronlems than it fixes. However using pearl barley water does not do away with the need to supply sufficient sodium and potassium in the diet, but there is certainly no need to use a commercial electrolyte mixture. Depending on the diet, particularly with meat as the main source of protein, something like Lite Salt available from most supermarkets sprinkled on the main meals is generally sufficient as it contains 27.6g of Potassium & 18.2g of Sodium per 100g, which is a reasonable balance between sodium and potassium for a racing greyhounds diet. In regard to the AMP you mentioned, that's a completely different situation as that is a product that is of some use both in increasing the available energy prior to, and in speed of recovery after a strenuous run, and again depending on the dog, the difficulty of the run and the state of fitness of the dog, this may still be required to guard against any possible detrimental effects of the run. Cheers, Tom

Adding pearl barley liquid to a greyhounds diet in no way affect anything else they may require in that diet, nor does it matter what the pearl barley liquid is mixed with. Pearl barley liquid is a food stuff that just happens to have a slight diuretic effect, its not a harsh chemical, and whether or not electrolytes such as sodium and potassium are added to any diet depends entirely what that diet is made up from and what the rest of the diet contains in regard to those substances and has nothing to do with nor is it affected by adding pearl barley liquid. Cheers, Tom
