Hi we have a racing greyhound that has fraught in his throat and mouth after every trial we had his Tonsils removed but he still has the same problem and his race and trial times aren't as good as they should be he is fit and well and is a good dog to eat .Can you give me any advice on what maybe causing this Thanks Paul

Hi Paul,
There are several reasons for this happening, but mainly because the dog is producing excessive saliva, and the rapid breathing as a result of running is turning the saliva into foam/froth.
The foremost reason for a dog producing excessive saliva is a feeling nauseous, and feeling nauseous can be bought on by overexertion, a diet that is causing problems, or stressing as a result of being at a race of trial track.
All of that can be aggravated by a low level illness/infection or even dental/tooth problems.
The things to check are: The diet, is there anything in the diet that could be causing the dog to feel nauseous, or has it been too long before a run or trial without anything in the stomach that's making the dog feel ill? A blood test to ensure that there is no infection or other illness that is making the dog feel ill during strenuous exercise. In particularly check liver function and bile related issues. Is the dog more hyper or aggravated now when it gets to the race/trial track than it may have been previously? Is the dog really fit enough to be running the distance it's trialing over, and how quickly is the dog recovering its breath after the run? Is it breathing cleanly, or is the breathing a bit raspy indicating there may be problems in the respiratory system or airways?
Last of all, recent dietary changes, particularly when it involves changing a diet from a so called "spelling diet" to a much lower fat "racing diet" can cause excessive bile in the dietary system, and this can cause nausea. It may therefore be worthwhile to talk to your vet about this issue and how that may be solved.
