Can you add too much water in their feed and put a strain on the kidneys. They get fed kibble and meat for breakfast and tea. How much water would you recommend to add to their feed?

Hi Tracy,
While it certainly takes time for the kidneys to filter excessive water, and that excessive water intake does cause problems with the electrolyte balance, it's unlikely that a sloppy feed is going to cause problems. Providing of course that the dog isn't suffering excessive water intake already as a result of a stressful run.
Under normal circumstances with a greyhound that is not ill keeping the feed soft can actually be beneficial as a lot of greyhounds are notorious poor water drinkers.
While it can be difficult to judge, as a general rule it's a good idea for dogs on a crushed biscuit type kibble and meat diet to soak the kibble with approximately the same volume of water as the quantity of kibble for one hour, tip off any excess water, and then mix the soft kibble thoroughly with the meat portion including any additional additives.
If the food is prepared in such a manner there is certainly no need to add additional water, however if the kibble portion of the diet is not suitable to be soaked adding one cup of water to the feed and mixing it in will suffice to maintain the fluid balance of the meal.
Cheers, Tom
