My brood bitch was done FSI 18 days ago.
On day 16 she excreted 5-6 blood clots. I've taken her to vet & he's put her on antibiotics. He said bring her back in 2 weeks for ultrasound, in response to my query on pregnancy.
She was put on 5 day course of antibiotics after FSI.
My question, has she miscarried? And is it more than likely due to infection or are there other causes? And why would vet wanna do ultrasound in a few weeks?
Thanks

Hi Glen,
Sorry mate but unfortunately passing blood clots and bleeding may be a sign that a miscarriage or partial miscarriage may have occurred or is imminent. Antibiotic treatment at this time is certainly indicated as bleeding can also occur as a result of an infection in the uterus, and so is an ultrasound to check on any fetuses if they are there and their stage of development.
Your Veterinarian is doing everything that is required at this point in time.
In regard to your question as to why a miscarriage can occur, that can be difficult to diagnose.
The two main reasons that it happens are that for one reason or another the uterus is unable to hold the growing fetuses in place, which can be a problem with the structure or the health of the uterus, or an infection in the uterus. The other reason being that the bitches body rejects the growing fetuses as a foreign body, and this can occur due to a genetic mismatch or an immunological problem with the bitch.
It's extremely disappointing and frustrating when something like this occurs after all the time money and effort put in to breed a litter of pups, and it can also be difficult to know whether or not the problems is with the bitch or from other causes as this can influence the decision as to whether or not to try and breed another litter with the same brood bitch. Hopefully your Vet may be able to provide more information in this regard after having done the ultrasound.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom
I do have some positive news re this story,
Bitch was given ultrasound. And vet saw at least 4 pups.
The bitch was exposed to weed spraying in the days prior to the above scenario occurring. I wonder if that could of been a factor in her miscarrying some embryos?

Hi Glenn,
That's good news, so glad to hear that. :-)
In regard to the reason for the partial abortion that's just about impossible to determine unfortunately, and if it was toxins of some sort that caused it to occur, all of the fetuses would have been killed, so it's unlikely that the weed spraying caused the problems.
Cheers, Tom
