Hi Tom,
I know too many bones can cause constipation but are rich in calcium. Insteadh of feeding meat and adding calcium d or something, what about if i crushed the bones down to tiny pieces -smaller that a pea size- and then add to meat ?
would this still cause constipation or would it work ?
thanks
DJ

Hi DJ
I would prefer you not to do this because dogs when they chew on the bones grind minute particles off the bone, and not too often little bits of bone. Constipation actually becomes worse if bits of bone are swallowed. If you really wanted to go down this path grinding raw bones (definitely NOT cooked) up into a powder and then mixing a heaped teaspoon of that in with the meal might do the job without causing digestive problems. However, I honestly don't think it's worth the drama of trying to clean bits of meat off the bone, grinding it up, and then trying to stop that mixture from going off while feeding a small amount to the dogs each day. The other thing is that you are defeating one of the main benefits of giving a dog a bone to chew on once a week, and that is keeping the teeth clean.
Cheers, Tom
