Hi tom, I gave my 2 year old racing greyhound 1cc of Ivomec yesterday under the skin behind the neck. And today it is like a fatty lump and the dog roars in pain if you go anywhere near it. Any idea how to get the swelling down and was it just a reaction? He is due to race next week but will not be able unless this goes! Does it take long to go away? Thanks, Kevin.

Sorry Kevin I'm unable to provide suitable advice in this situation as I have never injected a greyhound with Ivomec and would not recommend anyone doing so
Obviously the injection was not placed under the skin but finished up in the layers of skin and is unable to be absorbed in the manner that an subcutaneous injection should. Unfortunately this will also in crease the likelihood of an allergic reaction and you really need to take the greyhound to your Vet for advice and possible medication to reduce the inflammation in the area. At this point in time racing next week seems unlikely, as there is a possibility that the skin over the area could be adversely affected and an open sore could result.
Cheers, Tom

Thanks for the advice Tom. I took the dog to the vet and he said some dogs can have a reaction to the sting from the Ivomec. He recommended to simply shoot the Ivomec down the throat in future.... Is this an okay method? The pain and soreness from the lump is gone but he said it would take awhile for it to fully disappear. Am I best to just use traditional worming tablets?

Hi Kevin,
I'm pleased that the reaction did not get any worse, and yes in my opinion Ivomec is best used orally. Of course it should be remembered that Ivomec is not effective for tape worm and a tapeworm specific wormer should also be used on a regular basis.
Cheers, Tom
