Hi, Further to a thread I started on another site,I was wondering what others think about over racing - IMO a greyhound should not be raced more than 3 times a month (average) regardless of the distance raced.Greyhounds are not machines and should not be treated as such,I also realise that all dogs are different and should be treated accordingly,as a good trainer knows, but not all trainers are good trainers and think more of their bank balance than the welfare of the animal.

Surely you jest? Greyhounds were born to run!!!! Put a greyhound out into a 2 acre or so paddock and most will free run at top pace for much further than any distances covered in races....and that goes for "short coursers" or "stayers" too!!!

I had a dog that raced 19 weeks consecutively and won most of those races against quality opposition. Trainer is well respected and no one would doubt his methods. Those races were 500m plus.

Grahame,
You have made a statement that racing a greyhound more than 3 times per month is “over racing” the greyhound. With the inference that any racing more than this is going to hurt the greyhound and cause damage.
Mate by making this statement the only thing you have done is exposed your total lack of knowledge about either greyhounds, or the requirements of the training of any athlete so that they can perform to their very best safely, and with maximum enjoyment.
I can only hope for the poor greyhounds sake that you never get involved in training and racing any greyhounds.
Tom
