Hi Tom, What are your thoughts on having a dog on thyroxine tablets. I was given a bottle by my vet because the dogs coat has been a bit slow to come through and said this would help, his blood count was good and is in good health and performing well. Was told to give one tablet daily 0.4mg and this would be fine to continue as an ongoing thing. After some research I am in two minds as to whether to use them or not. Are there any side effects to using this as a daily supplement.

Hi Rick,
There is no doubt that many racing greyhounds have an imbalance between the the adrenal gland and the thyroid gland that effects how well the metabolism of the greyhound functions. This does affect the dogs coat in several ways, and to a certain extent also affects just how quickly injuries heal.
If it was recommended by your Vet who has the experience of years of involvement in racing greyhounds I would be inclined to follow his advice.
The downside if you consider it a downside, is that once on this drug it should not be stopped abruptly, and the greyhound should be slowly weened of it over a period of several weeks. The other effect, and this is more of a problem on extremely high dosages, is that it can also affect the function of the Para Thyroid and therefore the calcium levels in the bone structure. To offset this just ensure that the greyhound has the appropriate addition of enough calcium in the diet and more importantly sufficient vitamin D to balance out the meat portion of the diet.
Cheers, Tom
