Hi Rob,
Hiprex is a substance (Methenamine Hippurate) that acts as an type of antibiotic and reduces the bacteria numbers that are responsible for urinary tract infections, and as such has some effect in reducing the frequency of this type of infection. It does this by changing in the urine into Formaldehyde.
Because it changes into Formaldehyde it is highly unlikely to create concerns as a positive swab, however please be aware that the side effects may include nausea, and stomach upset. There is also some concern in regard to the substance forming Formaldehyde as Formaldehyde is suspected of causing cancer.
It is also important to clearly understand that the bacteria reducing effect of Hiprex are only effective in acid urine, and therefore administering anything that may alkalise the urine such as bi-carb or any of the various items sold to reduce the acidosis type effects of a stressful runs will also destroy any anti bacterial effect dosing with Hiprex may have.
So if you want my honest opinion I would say don't worry about giving any greyhounds Hiprex on a regular basis unless they have a proven urinary tract infection, and then it may be used concurrently with most antiotics to help clear up the urinary tract infection, and at that time the greyhound would not be racing anyway.
Cheers, Tom
