I have Lobby, a 4 1/2 yr old retired female, she started limping the past 2 days on a front leg and after reading this board I found a painful toe(she let out a good yelp when inspecting it) the wrist and upper leg seem fine, she allows full movement. My question is, I cannot find any lesions or lumps or foreign bodies, does she just need rest and for how long?

Hi Brian,
The sore toe you found on her has most likely some ligament damage to one of the joints in the toe. If there is any swelling putting the foot in cold water three times daily for two days will help in reducing this. If no swelling it generally takes around 14 days for that type of injury to settle down and allow her to walk normally again, but could take up to 6 weeks to fully heal. Keep in mind that this type of injury is often caused by excessively long toe nails placing more strain on the toe joints, and greyhounds are notorious for growing their toe nails extremely fast. With most greyhounds it is just about essential to clip their toe nails every month.
Cheers, Tom

Thanks for the reply, after looking more closely it seems swollen, so I will start the cold water soaks. Thanks again.

Hi Brian,
Further to this, if the swelling does not go down within 24 hours, and particularly if there is heat in the toe, there is a chance that the limping and the sore toe are in fact caused by an infection, in which case it will mean a trip to the vet.
Cheers, Tom

That is one of the things I am keeping my eye on, but there is no heat or redness of the skin in between the toes. Again, thank you, it's definitely hard to watch her limping because she is dying to take off running when she gets out in the yard and is always wanting to go for a walk.
