Hi Darren,
Collovet is not the sort of product that should be given as a regular additive to racing greyhounds, and is primarily formulated to stimulate the appetite of animals recovering from an illness, and to make them feel more energetic.
The main reason of course is the fact that it contains caffeine which presents a couple of problems. The main one being that it is difficult to accurately judge when you should stop giving it to avoid a positive swab, simply because that depends so much on the function of the kidneys of each individual greyhound. Using a substance such as caffeine on a regular basis can in some instances be accumulative and build up in the system making it even more difficult to judge just when to stop using it prior to racing.
The other problem I see with using a stimulating tonic regularly is that you need greyhounds to rest as much as possible between their exercise sessions, and you certainly do not need greyhounds that are pacing up and down in the kennel or going stupid in the yard because they are fired up on caffeine.
To me it would also be a worry just having that stuff sitting on the shelf with the rest of the vitamin additives because of the possibility that I might be preoccupied one day and accidentally and unknowingly add it to the food of the wrong dog.
To me it is one of those products that can be worthwhile on the odd occasion when a dog needs a pick me up, but it should be kept in the medicine cabinet and primarily used as a medicine.
Cheers, Tom
