Hi tom I recently had a dog suffer a gracilis injury, due to the age of him i took the decision to retire him an he's enjoying a happy retirement, when discussing the injury with various people i was advised to "gallop him to let him tear it again" it was not something i did as it didn't sound right to me the number of people who repeated this advise surprised me, was wondering if you know this theory an what your thoughts are on this thanks lee

Hi Lee,
I can assure you that you have done exactly right, as further tearing to the gracillis does nothing other than increase pain and scar tissue.
The only muscle that some have said may improve with allowing it to tear further is the long head of the triceps on the shoulder, and even then this may only be of some benefit if the original treatment for an injury to that muscle had been botched up.
Your boy would however benefit from regular massage to the old injury with massage oil or a warmth producing liniment.
Cheers, Tom
