G'day tom, just wanted to hear your opinion on calcium for racing dogs, brood bitches and pups. We currently use DCP on all our racing stock but are about to have our first litter in 4 weeks and wound like to know if the DCP is a suitable option for brood and pups. Cheers, Nick

Hi Nick,
DCP is as good as any as a calcium supplement as it contains the right balance of both calcium and phosphorous, however for any calcium supplement to be effective you do need to add vitamin D to the diet as well. In most instances the addition of cod liver oil appears to be reasonable effective in providing sufficient vitamin D.
For pups providing full cream milk or a calf milk substitute is a great way of providing easily absorbed calcium, and often feeding a small amount of raw finely minced chicken carcasses can also be of some benefit in providing the right calcium phosphorus ingredients for good bone development.
Keep in mind that feeding excessive amounts of calcium can be as detrimental to bone health and development as feeding no calcium at all.
While it can be difficult to ascertain just how much DCP to feed I have found that one tea spoon was sufficient for 500 grams of raw meat. But of course all that is not necessary if a commercial puppy food is provided.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Rob,
As long as the main protein portion of the diet is meat, it is essential to keep adding both calcium and Vitamin D to the diet to balance out the lack of calcium in fresh meat.
Nothing wrong with continuing to give them a teaspoon full everyday mixed in with the main meal.
Cheers, Tom

Hi tom iam using apple cider vinegar 10ml everyday as it is high in (calcium . Pottassium . & vit c ) can i use calcium plus without any problems . The feed iam feeding is straight gain record breaker . Thanx Donna . Hi Donna, No problems with feeding calcium plus with most meat based diets even when feeding apple cider vinegar as well. Mainly because from one table spoon of apple cider vinegar they would only gain one milligram of calcium. However when it comes to adding calcium to a diet that consists mainly of Gain record breaker you will need to be very careful because it is a complete balanced diet that allready contains the right amount of calcium as I'm sure you are well aware that excessive calcium is as bad for the dogs bone health as too little calcium. On a diet that consist of a formulated complete meal I would not advise anyone to add calcium unless meat was also being added, and then I would not be keen that this be done either without adding more carbs as just adding meat would throw the carbohydrate/protein quantities of the formulation out of balance. Cheers, Tom

While in some situations Calcium Carbonate can reduce the acidity of a substance I can see no dietary advantage in doing so, and no matter what you still have a situation where there would be excessive calcium in the diet according to those that formulated it in the first place. Cheers Tom

Hi Tom
I'm using Supercoat Grain free kibble but unfortunately it doesn't have info about calcium.
Would I be right in assuming it has balanced calcium also?
Many thanks.

Hi Glenn, You are right there is not a lot of information available in regard to the exact formulation, and all I can say is if it's not listed on the bag it's not in the bag. Personally I'm not a big fan of these types of dry foods. Pet Food Reviews - Supercoat Grain FreeCheers, Tom
