Hi John,
While it may sound knowledgeable to say a greyhound should have ten percent of fat in its diet and say a minimum of twenty percent protein, and then so much carbs. In fact it is just about impossible to judge when you look at the components of the diet if that diet is primarily based on fresh meat.
For instance just looking at the meat portion is confusing enough when you realize that fresh muscle meat contains around 70 to 75% of water, with the leaner meat containing the highest percentage of water. Then if that meat has been frozen the water percentage changes, because when meat freezes the water outside the meat cell freezes first and in the process this leaches water from the inside of of the cell. That is also why when you defrost frozen meat there is always a larger amount of water than you expect there to be.
Unless you have handled meat for a number of years or are an experienced butcher it is also just about impossible to judge the amount of fat in the meat you are including in the diet, and this then makes it very difficult to judge just how much fat should be added to get the percentage right depending on whether or not the greyhound is a sprinter or stayer.
My advice is to get to know the most successful trainer in the area where you live, ask him/her just what their diet is and if possible copy that diet, including purchasing the ingredients such as the meat portion from the same supplier.
Then if necessary you can slightly vary the different amounts of each to suit your individual greyhounds and your training methods, as these will also affect the diet you should be feeding.
Cheers, Tom
