Hi Tom
i had a blood test done on my greyhound in june and the results were
wbc: 6.26 m/mm3 RBC: 7.86M/mm3 MCHC: 30.7 g/dl THR: 81 m/mm3
lym: 32.2% MCV: 68.8 fl RDW: 10.3 MPV: 7.7 fl
mon: 2.8% Hct: 54.0% Hb 16.6 g/dl Pct: 0.06%
gra: 64.9% MCH: 21.1 pg PDW: 6.7

My dog has blood shot eyes and his skin is reddish pink ,he also has black rings around his tail .my vet suggested it was an allergic reaction to something in his environment.i had floor paint in his kennell and since this test was done i have covered it with concrete. my dog has improved since doing this and the black rings have disappeared but his eyes are bloodshot some mornings and some other mornings they,re clear and his skin is still reddish pink.
The first signs of trouble i got from him was when i gallopped him he came off the gallop and could,nt catch his breath and would stumble and stagger for a while before going back to normal. i took him to a coursing meeting and he won his first round, but it took him ages to recover from the run and so i had to withdraw him from the next round.
We regularily dose the dog for worms ,mites, fleas and ticks and keep our dogs clean. At first i blamed lung worm so i dosed the dog with fenbendazole. Then i changed diet ,with no affect. i have just got a second blood test done last week and the results were,

wbc: 6.82m/mm3 RBC: 7.97m/mm3 MCHC: 31.3 g/dl THR: 224 m/mm3
lym: 75.6% MCV: 68.4 fl RDW: 10.0 MPV: 9.4 fl
mon: 21.2% Hct: 54.5% Hb: 17.1 g/dl Pct: 0.21%
gra: 3.2% MCH: 21.4 pg PDW: 7.6

I would appreciate your assistance of what you might think is wrong with him and what are these blood tests telling you.

Hi Tomjoe,

Sorry mate but I'm not going to be able to provide much in the way of advice as it is impossible for me to take an in depth look at every blood profile I get asked about as it takes up too much time. That is why I wrote and posted the guidelines on how to interpret an analytical blood profile. (It is one of the locked posts in the top section of the web site.)

Not only that, but unfortunately I'm not instantly familiar with the way the information has been presented, and that just ads to the task of interpreting it correctly.

You have paid a veterinarian to have the blood profile done, and it is his/her job to interpret it and provide you with the correct advice as well as the appropriate treatment to get the dog healthy again. If your current vet is not up to the task find one that is.

The one thing that does stand out from that profile, and that is that the greyhound is in no state to be raced or even galloped behind a lure + the blood profiles done do not provide enough information to really find out just where the problems stem from as there is no information on the liver or kidneys nor any enzymes or waste products.

My vet insists he's fine and in good shape Tom. I have brought him to several different vets and no one seems to know what's wrong with him . I thought you may have seen these symptoms before and you might be able to shine a light on it for me. I understand you would need to check the dog yourself to have a fuller picture. I will go to another vet with him as I am not happy about the blood sample and I will ask for a more comprehensive test. Thanks for answering my post. I have,nt galloped him since last November.That's how long I have been trying to find out what's wrong with him. Thanks again.

Hi Tomjoe,

Mate just basically the Hct should around 60 to 62% so 54.5 indicates anaemia. This is also supported by the low MCH and the too low MCHC. In addition the Hb (haemoglobin) should be around the 19.5 minimum not 17.1.

The MCHC is low in iron deficiency, blood loss, and anaemias caused by infections in the liver or kidneys.

The white blood cell count is too high, and with a lymphocytes count of 75.6% indicates some sort of viral infection.

The pink skin concerns me as that can sometimes indicate a blood disease or even a form of leukemia.

The vet certainly needs to do his/her job a bit more thoroughly than what has been done to date. It may also be good idea to remind the vet that the breed of the dog is "Greyhound", and that the required blood parameters are a lot different for Greyhounds that what is the norm in any other breed of dog.

My knowledge of blooods is poor but your blog has been very helpfull. You live and learn i suppose.
