Hi tom, I've recently had a greyhound not race or trial for 4 weeks, it's free galloped in a paddock and been walking morning and night. Just wondering how fit will the greyhound be? What sort of percentage of original race fitness would it have lost? Previous runs were all over 500 meters. Would I start this prep off the same I would a dog that has say, just come from the breakers? Appreciate your advice

Hi Nico,
There is no doubt in my mind that the greyhound would have retained most of it's basic fitness by free galloping on a regular basis, and would only need two or three runs, first over around 300 metres and then around 400 metres, before having recovered enough to start back over the 500 metre trip.
The main thing to be careful of is it's first run back behind the lure after any spell as this is the time that many greyhounds try just too hard and often stress as a result of that.
Cheers, Tom
