tom I would like to know would you have any advice on a feed before racing recently I had a dog on a long journey to the race track it took approx. 5 hours he is a very good traveller and settles nicely and I took him out 3 times to do his business on the journey,I feed him his normal feed at 7 am (porridge and honey) i travelled 5 hours later around 1 pm and gave him a very light feed of chicken at 3 pm as he wasn't due to race until 9.30 pm the problem i have is the dog lost a Cpl of lb during the trip and i could see it as soon as i took him out of the van that he was light,i can understand a dog who is fretting, jumping about and excitable losing weight but he is such a good traveller and he wasn't dehydrated i was surprised any ideas?

Hi Jimmy,
It's certainly not unusual for a greyhound to lose a considerable amount of weight over any car journey lasting four hours or more, and while the greyhound at that time may not display any severe signs of dehydration, it is fluid loss that accounts for most of the lost weight.
To stop this occurring it is therefore best that at the first rest stop after two hours the greyhound is given around a good cupful of water, milk and a minute quantity of some type of electrolyte mixture, and then again every hour after that.
The other option is to make up the appropriate drink mixture before leaving home, storing it something that will keep it cool, and providing drinks of this during the journey.
Cheers, Tom
