Hi Tom,
I have this little bitch who seems to drink a lot, taking quick gulps, more licking the water. I had put this down to her nervousness, she wasn't doing this when we first brought her home after breaking her in. She has had 4 races, the last two she has led, (she is very quick out of the boxes) and then pulled out of it after about 100 metres. She finishes the race but at the end of the field, as if she had hit a brick wall. Could this have anything to do with her tonsils, or could she be like her mother and have extended pallet causing the problem. Did try to have a look down her throat but not sure what I should be looking at. Any advice much appreciated, cheers Noel

Hi Noel,
Tonsillitis will certain affect a greyhounds performance but not normally to the extent that you describe. In most instances the greyhound would be coughing or gagging after running.
If the problem was being caused by a soft palate reducing the ability to breathy easily I’m sure it would have shown up before this time.
The excessive water drinking is more of a worry as this can indicate other health problems, such as an infection either bacterial or viral, and or anaemia, which may be causing the greyhound not to have the energy to finish her races and is therefore causing excessive stress.
With this type of scenario I believe it best if your girl was examined by a specialist greyhound Vet, and had a full blood profile done to obtain a more definite diagnoses of what exactly is affecting her performances.
Cheers, Tom
