Hello Tom, Just a quick question. When you see 28% on bag of kibble, does this mean that bascially each kibble contains approx 28% protein.
so if this is true and i decide to feed meat and brown bread/pasta/rice-no kibble- should i feed 28% meat, say 5% fat, some veg and the remainder carbs like rice or bread or pasta. I would like to know if im heading in the right direction with this or am i totally off the mark, cheers

Hi Jason,
Sorry mate but it just not that simple.
If it states on a bag of dog food that it contains 28% protein, that means protein from all sources, and even wheat contains around 12% protein. Nor does what is written on the bag of dog food give you any idea as to what type of protein it is, nor does it give you any indication how much and which of the AMINO ACIDS in the protein are actually available to the dog after all the heat processes the kibble has gone through during the manufacturing process.
Unfortunately different types of protein contain different amino acids and it is the amino acid content and the availability of those amino acids that is the deciding factor on the quality of the diet.
A good diet should contains protein from various sources such as meat, eggs, milk, and even wheat or rice. Keeping in mind that even different types of meat can contain different quantities of protein.
On top of all that the protein and carbohydrate/ fats ratio required does vary depending on the age, the health, and the work load of the greyhound.
You will find much of the information you need on this web site in various posts.
Cheers, Tom

Tom - on purely an amino acid profile basis, what do you think of an 80-20 ratio of beef-chicken for the meat portion of the diet? I have tried other combinations but this seems good when it comes to recovery. Any views?

Hi Jason, (the other Jason)
As far as the meat portion of the diet is concerned a 80/20 ratio of beef and chicken is ideal. The different protein in chicken is beneficial and so is the chicken fat it adds to the diet.
Adding chicken to the meat portion of the diet is in fact essential if the beef being fed is head meat such as ox cheek, as this can contain as much 65% protein compared to the muscle portion of beef at around 30%.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom,
Is it fair to say that a quality kibble is just as good as all the meat, veg and carbs given the 'old way'
should we just move with the times and let the kibble manufacturers take the guess work out of feeding as there seems to be alot of work gone into getting the balance right for the racing greyhound
