Hello Tom, While walking my 14 month dog pup through the field he spotted something and took off-long story short i found him about a mile away and was totally exhausted, could hardly walk. I cooled him, gave him electrolytes and butter and got him on drip later that evening as vet was on a call out. he got acidosis, was very sore for week and then lost all his back. Two question may I ask
1/ is it ok to let him free gallop and stretch his legs-let him do whatever he wants(hes bouncing around-all soreness gone) 2/ could he be damaged for life or do they overcome this with time-what should we be expecting/what should i do.
throughout all this the dog was kept hydrated the whole time and blood tests where taken 10 hours after run and they were reading perfect.skin was also v good

Hi Joss,
It certainly is devastating when something like that happens to a young dog that you have invested a lot of hope in.
Because of the fact that your pup was only 14 months old when it happened there is every chance that the dog will fully recover without any long term ill effects.
However what does need doing to make certain of a full recovery, and you will need your Vets assistance in this, is a course of either testosterone or Anabolic steroid injections to stimulate rapid muscle building and muscle structure improvement. As far as the type of Anabolic steroid, the dosage, and length of treatment, this decision is best left to your Vet.
I see no problems in allowing the pup some free running providing it is supervised and limited for the first two weeks to no more than 300 metres every couple of days.
Cheers, Tom
