Hi Robert,
The above is a quote from one of my articles on fluid regulation in the top section of the web site.
As you can see there are some basic reasons for excessive thirst, and they range from lack of specific electrolytes such as sodium and potassium through to poor kidney function, an infection in the kidneys, or a viral infection.
The other cause can be an excessively strenuous effort behind the lure which is made worse if there is a low grade kidney infection present.
One other but rather obscure reason for the excessive water drinking can be severe muscle damage to either thigh muscle (Lateral Vastus) particularly the left thigh in the top section of the muscle.
In the initial instance treatment exists of providing water with the appropriate electrolyte mixture such as Vytrate. + Minirin to treat the thirst and an antibiotic cover for 7 days.
In most instances it is best to seek treatment from your Vet as often the greyhound may require intravenous fluids and urine tests to check specific gravity and for an infection.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Robert,
Mate, a young dog that regularly drinks what appears to be an excessive amount of water, and not just tipping the bowl over, has to have something fundamentally wrong with the system that controls fluid balance in the body.
I believe it is certainly worthwhile to have a full blood profile done, particularly to check those levels pertaining to kidney function, and to monitor the specific gravity of the urine everyday for a week to get a better picture of what is actually going on.
Cheers, Tom
