Hi Tom,
When does the the blood become normal for a bitch in/after season. For example after three weeks should the blood be normal or could they still be slightly off during and after milk period etc
regards
dj

Hi dj,
Sorry mate no simple answer as that can vary too much between various bitches, and depends upon the initial health of the bitch, as well as the conditions it was kept under during the season, and any possible bacterial or viral infections it may have been exposed to during this time.
Plus unfortunately some bitches do get an infection in the cervix, and in some instances inflammation of the ovaries that can affect the blood profile and performances after the season.
Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom, Following up on this issue, a bitch that I own is some three months past her first day of spotting. She is back in full work. Today courtesy of her trainer who has access to a local pathology lab, I received a most unusual blood profile. The blood analysis was performed as there has been a major loss of "run on" strength in her most recent trials and races. The bitch looks good and has been checked for injuries. My trainer forwarded these readings this afternoon:
WBC 3.98 RBC 6.86 HGB 173 HCT 0.498 MCV 72.6 MCH 25.2 MCHC 347 PLT 25 RDW-SD 36.5 RDW-CV 14.6 Mono 0.23 EO 0.12 Baso 0.0 RET 0.36 IRF 10.3 LFR 89.7 MFR 7.7 HFR 2.6
If these readings are correct, then I can only summize that this bitch is chronically ill, esp given the Platelets extremely low reading. However having read many of your comments on Blood Profiles, I am wondering given the elevated RDW readings wherever the bitch doesn't have a major worm investation issue that is creating these readings. Or do you think it is much more serious than that? I have asked the trainer for a comment on her stools and urine, but as yet havent heard back. With thanks Garry

While I no longer comment on individual blood profiles ..........This bitch should not be in work at all as she is ill, anaemic, needs worming, and obviously and urgently needs a more knowledgeable trainer.

Agree. Will start with getting the bitch to a vet and having a follow up blood profile to confirm results.
