Hi Tom,
This may be a silly question but are blood readings different for bitches that are coming in season, if so what readings would they be and how long before, i.e. 2/3/4 days before they come in season. Secondly if dogs know/smell bitches that are in season can the upset the dogs results
many thanks

Hi DJ,
A standard racing blood profile would show no difference between a bitch about to come on season, and one that is not.
However the blood serum concentrations of Estrogen do rise slightly during the few days just before coming on season.
While it can be difficult in some instances to differentiate from some infections, and often requires smear samples over several days it is also possible to see that a bitch is about to come on season by the changes in the cells found in the cervix and vulva.
Male greyhounds that are kennel mates to a bitch about to come on season certainly know, and yes it does change their behaviour pattern in most instances, and in isolated cases may upset the way they behave during a race.
Cheers, Tom
