Hi Tom,
We have just got a greyhound that has fits in the catching pen, is there anything we can do for her or should she be retired?

Hi Kat,
Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done to control seizures in racing greyhounds because the required medication would not only cause a positive swab, but would also affects the race performance of the dog.
The causes are also varied and can be difficult to diagnose, and can range from lack of oxygen to the brain after a strenuous run, a severe electrolyte imbalance, encephalitis, to a previous brain injury as a result of a fall, or in rare cases a brain tumour.
I’m sorry to say that in most instances it is best to retire the greyhound from racing.
Cheers, Tom
