Hi Tom,
I have a dog who has lost roughly 1/tenth on his run home each of his last 3 runs. Same track, same distance. Routine and feed the same. Dog is sound.
A friend suggested he may need some iron?
A penny for your thoughts?
Regards
Chris

Hi Chris,
When there is reduction in the number of red blood cells and/or a reduction in the appropriate amount of haemoglobin in those red blood cells, there is a reduction in the available oxygen. In this situation you would expect the greyhound to still have reasonable speed for the first part of the journey, but really struggle on the run home, and yes additional iron, folic acid, B12, and B-complex are going to help overcome that problem.
The other issues that may exist are a low grade viral or bacterial infection affecting the greyhounds stamina.
If you are satisfied that there is no chance of an injury holding the dog back, the best thing to do is to have a blood profile done to determine exactly what the health problem may be that is stopping the dog from running up to its previous best times, as that will also provide the right information as to what is required to get the blood back right again.
Cheers, Tom
