Hi Thomas,
Manufacturers and those selling products, particularly those products used in animals, sometimes make various claims of benefits that are based on rather weak science and and a lot of suppositions.
Unfortunately Pain Stopper injection in my honest opinion falls into that category.
Pain Stopper contains D-phenylalanine in only a very small amount per ml, and would require around 4 ml to be injected in the muscle tissue 4 hours before racing for it to have any effect at all.
The effect would be minimal and of very little benefit to a greyhound, while the muscle tissue the substance was injected into would be extremely painful for the dog for anything up to 12 hours.
The amino acid Phenylalanine is able to cross the blood brain barrier and in the process change into other substances that have a calming effect on the brain. While the manufactured form, D-phenylalanine, has difficulty crossing this barrier, has minimal effect on the brain, and in fact some of the dose given is passed out in the urine unchanged having done nothing at all.
It also contains L-isoleucine, and while isoleucine is also an essential amino acid, and is required for muscle repair, for it to break down into a usable substance able to perform this function, Biotin (Vitamin B7) is also essential.
If Biotin is not available in adequate quantities at the same time, unprocessed L-isoleucine can have a detrimental effect on various metabolic functions related to muscle maintenance, protein synthesis, lipid metabolism, and fatty acid metabolism.
In regard to L-carnitine; this is beneficial mainly in assisting fatty acids to be used as energy, and is therefore of more benefit to greyhounds running over the longer distances, and has some benefits for greyhounds with fatty acid liver problems.
I guess the simple answer to your question “is this a good injection” is; no not really worth the cost, and to answer your other question, because the product is based on amino acids; no it would not show in a swab.
Cheers, Tom
