Tom, I have just noticed one of my racing dogs eating cape weed could you tell me if it is poisonous? I have now put a muzzle on him so he cant.

Hi Barbara,
While like you I don’t like the idea of racing greyhounds eating anything that is not part of a carefully prepared diet, I can assure you that cape weed is not toxic to dogs.
In fact in herbal medicine Calendula Officinalis, which is the botanical name for cape weed, has been used in preparations for healing skin irritations, minor wounds, and for treating insect bites.
While it is highly unlikely, I have no idea if cape weed contains anything that may cause a positive swab, so muzzling the dogs to stop them from eating it is probably a good idea.
