Tom, Years ago we always dosed our pups with ivec mectin oral sheep for worms. Nowdays you must buy in 20l containers (just a bit too much). The only 1litre I can get now is Virbamec oral plus selenium. Active constituents are 0.8g/l Abamectin & 0.4g/l selenium. It is the selenium content that I am concerned with. Do you think this would be safe for 2 month old pups as well as racing dogs? and what dose rate should we use, as per label for sheep it is 1ml / 4kg?

Hi Jo,
Unfortunately I do not know of any studies that have proven the safety of Abamectin for use in greyhounds. While it’s use in sheep is well documented it is a completely different drug to Ivermectin.
In addition, Selenium in high doses is quite toxic, and there is a fine line between a therapeutic dose for use in selenium deficiency, and one that causes toxicity and long term liver damage.
In some instances a low dose of selenium is added to some drugs to improve their effectiveness, as in some chemotherapy cancer treatments, and it is quite possible that it has been added to the Abamectin to enhance its ability to kill internal parasites.
Because of the current lack of evidence as to the safety of Abamectin in greyhounds I’m unable to recommend its use or provide any guide as to safe dosage rates.
Cheers, Tom
PS. If anyone reading this post has used Abamectin for intestinal worm treatments in greyhounds we would like to hear from you.

Thanks for that Tom. Next query is can you buy Ivomec oral in smaller packs than the 5l available at the rural store?. Also can the injectable be used orally and at what doses?

Hi Jo, Ivomec injectable can be safely used as an oral wormer, as the actual drug is exactly the same as in the standard oral wormer. For dose rates see HERE. (200 mcg per kg bodyweight) I'm not aware of any smaller quantities available other than what is supplied for livestock farmers. Cheers, Tom
