I'd like your views on feeding milk to greyhounds once they go into full racing work??? Also I recently read an article by highly successful Australian trainer Reg Kay who stated he fed roughly 1/3 of the dog's total feed for the day as breakfast and the other 2/3 as tea consisting of basically Coprice Working Dog kibble [25% Protien - 15% Fat] and Kangaroo Meat along with the additives 1 Rebound Tab, 1 Beta K Tab A.M. & P.M., Vit E A.M. only, Max RBC P.M. only, Sprint Oil P.M. only......no milk. Thoughts?

Hi Giuseppe,
A lot of trainers do not like giving milk to their greyhounds in the belief that it interferes with the digestive system. However it would only affect those greyhounds severely that are lactose intolerant.
To be quite honest during the 40 years that I trained greyhounds I do not remember ever having trained a greyhound that had problems with milk in the diet. In fact milk protein contains amino acids that are essential to maintaining a healthy immune system.
Having said that, the problem with feeding whole milk is that it is inclined to curdle in the gut, and yes that may cause minor digestive problems with some greyhounds.
It is for that reason that I prefer to add milk protein to the diet in the form of whole cream milk powder rather than whole milk. Better still would be to add Colostrum powder to the diet.
Cheers, Tom
