hi tom, have found myself in the position of having the 2 dogs(that i have in work) with what i believe is decreased kidney function..have been in dogs a fair while and have never had the troubles that i am having now... both dogs had at least 6 weeks of lead walking (5km a day) and free galloping together every 2-3 days....both dogs had 2 handslips of about 200m and performed well, but on different occassions drank more water than i would like to see...... was feeding these dogs science diet,as that's what now appears to be whats done....but have now reverted back to a little bit of coprice dry food with the rest made up of cooked rice and beef of course.... am i kidding myself that the protein level in the previous dry food has caused me to get problems that i have never previously encountered??? and now that i have this problem how can i fix it??? pulling my hair out,can you help please..

Hi Pearl, The situation you find yourself in is a common result due to feeding an excessively high protein diet. Unfortunately when a greyhound is forced to burn protein instead of complex carbohydrates for energy it results in an excessive amount of waste product that has to be removed by the kidneys from the blood plasma. In the long term this can result in reduced kidney function that some greyhounds never fully recover from. The only thing I can suggest is that you do away with Coprice as well and swap over to a brown bread and meat diet. And while I’m certainly not in favour of the product being used on every dog all the time, using the recommended dose of Neutradex for the next four to six weeks after each run will assist the kidneys in removing waste products more efficiently and should therefore aid in kidney recovery. It may also be worth reading THIS string of posts. Cheers, Tom
