Tom
Following on from the topic of stopper bone, we found out that the dog had severe referal pain which was going to the stopper bone area. It was assessed that the dog has had a shoulder injury for quite some time 6months. We have had the shoulder fixed with treatment however now being he is running in the correct technique and not favouring the shoulder he is now striking himself badly. Infact we trialled him on Monday night at the Gardens and won a puppy trial by around 5 lengths however after he had cooled down we discorved a bruise that was around 15cm in size where he had struck himself . He had struck himself so bad on his back leg that he has broken his metacarpal on his front leg from striking. Could you give me some advice on strapping we will need to apply to him when he resumes running again from injury.
Regards Corey

Hi Corey, Mate I am sorry that you have struck further injury problems with your greyhound. However, I find it impossible to see how a greyhound can fracture a metacarpal due to striking the inside of the hind limb, no matter how hard it strikes this area. The most likely scenario is the dog running with pain in the rail side metacarpal, and due to that twisting its foot inwards to reduce the pain, and this in turn twists the elbow out causing it to strike the inside of the hind leg and causing track leg bruising. So in my honest opinion some of the damage to the metacarpal was there prior to the run, and this run then aggravated it to the extent that the fracture in the metacarpal became obvious. For a bit more info on the causes of track leg have a read of THIS post. Cheers, Tom
