Hi Tom,
I was wondering if you might be able to assist me please. I have a dog pup that has been trialling up the straight track well. Today I increased his distance by about 60 metres as I have been building him up.
A few hours later he seems to be showing signs of water diabetes. He is drinking quite a bit and is peeing excessively. One pee had a slight trace of blood in it but others have been a normal colour.
I have given him a Kynoselen injection, 2 Uro tabs and added some Vytrate to his tea also.
He has had this problem once before when he has had to wait a while to trial and so he got worked up beforehand. And today he had to wait a little while too.
Are you able to recommend anything to me and how long should I give him until his next run?
Thanks very much.

Tom, I also have a problem with a 14 month old bitch just into the kennels. She wants to drink her water bowl dry every time she returns to the kennel even if she has only been emptied at lunch time. she has done very little real work and should not need the water she is drinking. I have started taking her bowl out and just giving her a good drink before returning her to the kennel. How do I know if she has a real problem or could thisbe ahabit forming?

If it's not water diabetes brought on by a hard run or stressful exercise my money would be on a kidney infection. If you have your own "piddle sticks" a simple test of a sample of the bitch's urine will soon tell you. If not your vet would test her urine as his first action to identify the problem. Excessive use of electrolytes or kidney tonics will also have similar symptoms. My moneys on a kidney infection!!! Refer to Tom's article on here re Urine analysis...

I have a friend who has a whippet with the same sort of symptoms, the dog is also very hungry,he has had a blood test done and the vet thinks it could be Cushings disease,he needs more blood test to diagnose it for sure, hope yours hasnt got that.

I managed to get some urine analysis sticks.
He is still showing symptoms of water diabetes. I spoke to vet and he said to remove all plain water and only give him Vytrate mixed in and keep him quiet for the week.
He has a pH 5
Blood was the highest reading on the chart - 200.
Can anyone offer me any help please?
I want to get him right asap.

It didn't develop into Acidosis, luckily, Ray. Could have turned into it if I kept working him but I have kept him very quiet.
It is Water Diabetes.
I have gotten some very good advice and also got a hold of some Minirin and have given the dog that and he is improving greatly. pH is going back up. Blood reading is still high so am working on that.
